Statistics


Statistics can't convey all the impact that sexual violence has on victims and their families. However, they can provide a glimpse into how many persons are victimized, who they are, and the charactistics of the crimes.

Sexual Violence in Florida
The only statistics currently published in Florida are the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's totals gathered from law enforcement agencies throughout the state. These numbers do not reflect the total number of individuals that were victimized by sexual offenses, but represent only sexual offenses that were reported to law enforcement

  • Thirteen percent of adult American women have been victims of at least one forcible rape in their lifetime. One out of every eight adult women, or at least 12.1 million American women, have been the victim of forcible rape.   • 18% of women surveyed said they experienced a completed or attempted rape at some time in their life and 0.3% said they experienced a completed or attempted rape in the previous 12 months.   • One in six boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 16.

  • It is a misconception that "real" rapes will produce serious physical injury. 70% of rape victims reported no physical injury. 4% sustained serious injuries, while 24% had minor physical injuries. However, 49% describe being fearful of serious injury or death during the rape.

  • Estimates suggest that males account for 25% to 35% of child sexual abuse victims.
