FCASV 2010 Sexual Violence Conference

Mark your calendars for the 2010 FCASV Sexual Violence Conference June 9-11th at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida.  FCASV is partnering with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence to showcase an impressive line-up of national speakers on a variety of topics, including a domestic violence workshop track.

Dorothy Edwards, PhD, director of the University of Kentucky’s Violence Intervention and Prevention Center, will open the conference with her uplifting address Green Dot: A Comprehensive Approach to Violence Prevention.  Green Dot is a model of violence prevention that emphasizes the role of bystanders in addressing power-based personal violence, including sexual violence, dating violence and stalking.

Loretta Ross, national coordinator of Sistersong--Women of Color Reproductive Health Collective, will speak on ending violence against women through a human rights strategy.  On Friday, Byron Hurt, anti-sexist activist, writer and documentary filmmaker of Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes will close the conference with his address “Beyond Denial and Deflection: How to Inspire Men to Look Within.”

Other highlights include Stephen Gold, PhD, director of the Trauma Resolution Integration Program (TRIP) at Nova Southeastern University’s Psychological Services Center who will teach a three-workshop series entitled “Contextual Therapy: Treating Survivors of Complex Trauma.”  The conference will also feature “An Angel Cried a Tear Last Night,” a powerful theatrical performance on her survival of childhood incest presented by Amy Marschak.

On Monday and Tuesday the conference days will end with wellness workshops such as yoga, nutrition, art or aromatherapy to encourage participants to relax and care for themselves.

FCASV is still seeking proposals for workshops on all topics related to sexual violence.  The deadline for submissions is Friday, February 5, 2010.  Find the call for proposals on our website.
