FCASV Prioritizes National Sexual Assault Work

FCASV has been involved in many national sexual assault activities in the past several months. Five FCASV staff members attended the National Sexual Assault Conference in Alexandria, VA on September 9-11 and brought home lots of new ideas including information about making use of cutting-edge technology in our work.

Before the conference, the National Alliance to End Sexual Violence (NAESV) held an advocacy day to provide training on major policy issues and arrange meetings with members of Congress. Jennifer Dritt, Terri Poore, Ebony Tucker and Sandy Reynolds from Palm Beach County Victim Services met with several key members of the Florida delegation including Congresswoman Wasserman-Schultz , Congressman Robert Wexler and staff of Congressman Tom Rooney on national priorities including Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) appropriations, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) preservation legislation, Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Fix and Reauthorization legislation.

In her role as Vice President and Chairperson of the legislative committee NAESV, Terri Poore attended a late September reception with Vice President Joe Biden and Attorney General Eric Holder to honor the 15th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. She also participated in meetings with Lynn Rosenthal, the Obama administration’s liaison on violence against women and Tina Tchen with the White House Council on Women and Girls.

Terri has also been working closely with other national advocates on VAWA reauthorization and appropriations and Senator Al Franken’s office

on an amendment to ensure that victims of sexual violence working with defense contractors are not required to arbitrate their cases, legislation to decrease the DNA backlog, and legislation to ensure servicewomen have access to emergency contraception.

On a low note, due to budget shortfall, NAESV had to end its contract with Ellen Fern of Washington Partners, our national lobbyist. Donations are desperately needed to recommit to critical advocacy efforts in D.C. Please visit the NAESV website to donate and read about recent accomplishments.
